How did you find your current go-to electrical contractor, and how long have you been working with them? | I found my go-to electrical contractor through a trusted referral from a colleague within the property management industry. We’ve been working together for about 10 years. Their work consistently reflects quality, reliability, and a deep understanding of compliance with regulations, making them indispensable in managing commercial and residential properties. | I met my current go-to electrical contractor through a local membership-based networking group. Outside the group we met to discuss our business goals, ideal clients, and services to be able to mutually refer appropriate and qualified clients to each other. I have been working with my current electrical contractor since 2016 on a range of both commercial and residential projects, varying in size and scope. |
What are some of the electrical-related product/infrastructure trends you’re seeing in renos today? | Smart-home integration is a significant trend, with many renovators looking for energy-efficient solutions like smart lighting and thermostats. Additionally, electric vehicle charging stations are becoming increasingly popular as more homeowners prepare for future needs. Electrical contractors are also seeing demand for better circuit safety systems, especially with solar power installations. |
Technological advances such as home automation are something clients ask a lot about. However, some automation products can be expensive to install retrospectively. It’s important to have the infrastructure for such electrical trends considered in the design and planning phase of the project before the build commences. Traditional products such as LED downlights remain popular due to their energy efficiency and how easy they are to install and replace. Energy efficiency is important to clients moving forward. |
Where can electrical contractors add extra value in the renovation process? | Electrical contractors can add extra value by offering energy-saving solutions, ensuring all systems are up to code, and future-proofing homes with smart tech integrations. Their insights into cost-effective and sustainable options can help homeowners save money long-term while adding resale value to properties. | I rely on my electrical contractor for advice on electrical and lighting plans, so in the design stage of the renovation process, electrical contractors can add extra value. The practical experience an electrical contractor has is invaluable in determining the quantity of light, type of light, position of light switches, power requirements and so on. |
What are the qualities you look for in an electrical contractor? | I look for reliability, strong communication skills, and a thorough understanding of both commercial and residential regulations. Experience in handling complex projects, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with other trades on-site are also crucial qualities. |
The electrical contractor I work with shares the same business values I have for my studio business – good communication, a solutions mindset, transparency, quality service and responsiveness. This ensures that clients are confident that my referral to the electrical contractor produces good quality work. |
What’s the one standout time an electrical contractor went above and beyond in a renovation project you were working on? | One standout moment was when my electrical contractor identified a major wiring issue in an older property during a renovation. Not only did they address the problem quickly and efficiently, but they also suggested upgrading the entire system to improve safety and future-proof the property. |
My preferred electrical contractor has worked above and beyond on a couple of occasions, including installing an intricate pendant light in a difficult staircase. And anytime there is a requirement to troubleshoot on a renovation, my electrical contractor goes above and beyond to find the best solution. Travelling to remote locations, tackling complex requests and anything that requires retrofitting, my electrical contractor goes above and beyond. |
