Morning Routine For Electricians: Your Five-Step Morning Reset

Let’s face it, crawling into a hot ceiling or rewiring a tricky fitout at 7am is a grind. As an electrician, your job demands focus, a steady hand, and a body that can handle the tools and the tight spaces. Getting out of bed is only half the battle – the way you kick off the first hour sets the vibe for the whole day.

According to Karen Aroney, a registered nutritionist with a background in psychology and founder of ExecFuel, most of us start the day in a stress-response without even realising it.

Managing stress effectively is becoming increasingly important, particularly given the growing focus on mental health in the Australian electrical industry.

She sees this exact pattern play out over and over, noting that a simple, phone-free morning routine can make a massive difference to your energy, focus, and appetite for the rest of the day.

So ditch the stress (and the sugar crash) with these five non-negotiable morning habits.

Key takeaways for electrical contractors

  • Avoid checking your phone immediately after waking to help manage stress levels.
  • Drink water before coffee to improve hydration and concentration.
  • Choose a protein-rich breakfast over sugary options to support steady energy.
  • Include simple mobility exercises to reduce stiffness and support physical performance.
  • Write down the day’s priorities to improve organisation and reduce mental overload.

Why should electricians avoid checking their phones first thing in the morning?

You remember these right? It sat on your bedside table before your smartphone took its place. There was no screen to scroll, no random notifications from apps you forgot you had and it never mentioned the weather, but it did have one crucial function: an alarm. Simply set, sleep and wake to the analog goodness of the humble alarm clock.

The bonus being you won’t immediately start your day doomscrolling – a huge win since checking your phone first thing instantly increases cortisol (the stress hormone), unlocking some super negative, anxious vibes before your day even begins.

“Using an alarm clock means you can give yourself time to properly wake up before touching your phone,” Karen says. “This short pause stops your cortisol from spiking too early, which means steadier energy, better focus and fewer cravings later in the day – especially important when you’re working with live power or a situation where a lapse in focus can cost you.”

Water first – caffeine second

It’s revolutionary, we know, but hear us out. After the ideal seven to eight hours of sleep, your body wakes up thirsty. While our brain wants the coffee, our body needs the water. Drinking a glass of the clear stuff first thing not only rehydrates, it also kickstarts our metabolism, balances cortisol levels, looks after our stomach lining and even protects teeth from the dreaded ‘coffee stained’ look. The result? Whiter teeth, a clearer brain and an energised body.

“Most people wake up dehydrated, which makes fatigue and brain fog worse,” Karen says. “A big glass of water before your first coffee stabilises blood pressure, improves concentration and reduces the mid-morning slump. It also breaks the ‘grab coffee and go’ autopilot loop that keeps the body stuck in stress mode.”

Why is a protein-rich breakfast important for electricians?

After the water, comes the food (and the coffee… phew). We know you’re an adult and can buy whatever you want from the cereal aisle (yes, we’re talking about the Fruit Loops you were never allowed as a kid), but ultimately your parents were right – that stuff is crap. Instead of the highly refined sugar spiral, plan a brekkie packed with protein and complex carbs so your brain and body are properly fuelled until lunch time.

“Skipping breakfast or grabbing something sugary guarantees an energy dip where you’ll hit the wall at around 10am or 11am – exactly when you need steady hands and focus,” Karen adds. “A protein-first option like eggs, Greek yoghurt, a protein shake, or leftover dinner keeps blood sugar stable and gives you steady energy for hours. This is one of the fastest ways to improve stamina, focus and stress tolerance on the tools.”

How can stretching help electricians prepare for the day?

Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting you go full yogi on us – a morning stretch sesh doesn’t automatically mean incense and chanting. But it does mean you’re making the decision to protect your muscles, bones and all the bits that connect the two from injury now and in the future. As a busy sparky, focus on your shoulders, lower back, quads and hamstrings, you need all those bad boys loose and limber for a day on the tools, crawling through ceilings.

“A quick mobility sequence for your back, hips and shoulders reduces stiffness and cuts injury risk,” Karen explains. “Slow, controlled movement also signals safety to the nervous system, helping you start the day less wired and more focused.”

Plan your day – use a pen

Yep, an actual real-life pen and notebook are all you need to get your brain into business mode for the day ahead. So, what’s on the agenda? What appointments, meetings and site quotes are booked in and what does the team need from you? Writing down your essential tasks and mapping out your plan for the day stops you from feeling overwhelmed and keeps the business (and your brain) running smoothly.

“Writing your plan on paper before the day starts helps your brain feel calm and in control. It doesn’t just get the jobs out of your head — it clears all the extra mental noise too, like worries about deadlines, things you’re trying not to forget, and the pressure of everyone needing something from you,” says Karen.

“When it’s all written down, your brain stops trying to hold everything at once, which means you feel clearer and less stressed before the calls and messages even begin. For business owners who deal with pressure from the moment they wake up, this small habit makes the whole day run smoother.”

Tick off these five essential moves before you even hit the site and you’ll be sharper, stronger, and running on pure power all the way to knock-off time.

Is it better to drink water before coffee?

Yes. Drinking water first helps address dehydration after sleep and can improve concentration before having coffee.

What is a good breakfast for electricians?

Protein-rich options such as eggs, Greek yoghurt, protein shakes and leftover dinner can help maintain steady energy throughout the morning.

How long should a morning stretching routine take?

A quick mobility sequence targeting the back, hips and shoulders can help reduce stiffness and prepare the body for physical work.

Why write down daily tasks instead of keeping them in your head?

Writing tasks down helps reduce mental clutter, improve organisation and create a greater sense of control before the workday begins.

Can avoiding your phone in the morning improve focus?

Allowing yourself time to wake up before checking your phone can help reduce early stress responses and support steadier focus throughout the day.
