It reads as proof rather than a sales pitch, which is exactly what helps you earn trust with your followers.” Answer the questions your customers are asking Customers search for answers to questions. So too do AI platforms. Even if customers aren’t searching for answers to questions, if they stumble upon an answer to a question they’ve been thinking about, or have at some point faced – or even just find interesting – they’ll likely stop for a few seconds. “Content that answers a real question does well, such as why a plug keeps blowing a fuse or what a flickering light usually means. It's useful on its own, so people save it or send it to someone else, which is how it reaches more than just your followers. Content that doesn't work is anything that reads as an advert, such as before-and-afters with no explanation, generic captions about hard work and reliability, or a caption that's really just 'DM me for a quote'. NHP recently visited regional Victoria to sit down with the Riches family — founder Les, his son Russell, and grandsons Jack and Sam, who together make up Les Riches Electrical — to ask them a simple question: after all these years, why Sprecher + Schuh? The answer, it turns out, is as straightforward as the people giving it. “We’ve used Sprecher + Schuh for over three generations — why would we use anything else?”— Jack Riches A trade that runs in the family Les Riches started his apprenticeship in 1953, at the age of 15. Back then, much of the country around Colac was still being connected to the grid for the first time — homes, dairies and sawmills that ran on steam engines and generators were only just going electric. “A lot of the areas around Colac were just getting the power on,” Les recalls. “We were taking out steam engines and putting in electric motors.” Les Riches, Founder of Les Riches Electrical From those early jobs, Les built a business — and then he built a team the way regional tradies always have; by bringing the next generation up through it. Regular readers of our magazine and online articles will be well aware of the fact that here in Australia we’re facing an unprecedented skills shortage. According to current projections, we need 42,000 additional electricians by 2030 to support our energy transition, housing and infrastructure demands. To meet this challenge some creative thinking is needed across the board. Yes, those traditional pathways of apprenticeships from school will be ever-more important, but it’s not a one-solution problem. At the same time, the traditional workforce is being disrupted, with artificial intelligence (AI) making some roles redundant, and this could potentially create something of a perfect storm for the electrical industry. Of course, bringing in ‘newcomers’ who have a couple of decades of experience behind them is a different challenge altogether, compared with employing a green apprentice. With that in mind, we caught up with Daniel Phipps who re-joined the electrical industry at the age of 39 after a long career spent primarily in IT – and which began with almost three years as an electrical apprentice. Electrical Gems (EG): Daniel, you actually trained as an electrical apprentice before deciding it wasn’t quite right for you. Tell us about that. Daniel Phipps (DP): Out of high school, I started an apprenticeship with what was then called RailCorp. I completed just under three years there as an apprentice. It was very pigeonholed and limited to repetitive maintenance roles, so after a while, I figured it wasn't for me, pulled up stumps, and went back to study business and marketing. I then moved into an IT role with a print company, built up through administration across several mergers, and progressed my IT career into infrastructure networking and cybersecurity. EG: What prompted you to leave an established corporate IT career to pick up the tools again? DP: Something was burning in my mind the whole time. I always enjoyed doing physical work, and a desk job really wasn't for me long-term. Over the last couple of years, as businesses started implementing a lot of AI, the push became about creating efficiencies – basically working out how to do more for less. I could see how that was going to affect my role eventually. I realised that while my job wasn't going to be gone immediately, there would be heavy downward pressure on roles where people spent their whole careers establishing technical knowledge. AI allows anyone to type the right prompt into a system and pull that information instantly. I didn't want to be 50 years old, handed a redundancy package, and being in a position where I need to re-enter a job market where 100 people are vying for a role that has seen its salary halved due to corporate efficiencies. I wanted to complete my trade because it's a physical path that is far more future-proofed. EG: What were the biggest shocks or adjustments when you stepped back into the electrical world? DP: The physical aspect took longer to adjust to than I expected. I was physical at home, but doing it five or six days a week was a real shock. Firstly, it’s that reassurance of having an expert assess your business and recommend what you need cover for – and where risks might lie. It’s one thing giving it the once over yourself, and figuring out where you believe there are risks. It’s another completely for an independent expert reviewing it and identifying potential weak spots. As well as this, they can work with you to put into place better processes and procedures to help you manage risk more effectively – therefore helping you build a better business. It found that 72% of Australian consumers identified excellent service as a driver of loyalty – ahead of discounts and loyalty programs. And, when consumers were asked what would influence them to return to a small business, 69% nominated customer service, alongside product quality and price. PwC Australia's 2025 Customer Sentiment Survey, meanwhile, backs this up. Based on research involving 1,600 Australians across eight consumer industries, it found that almost 88% of customers were more likely to repurchase after good service, while almost 69% would consider switching after a bad experience. So regardless of how good your work is, your service matters – because it sticks in your mind. A home that can be communicated with to turn lights on or off, or heat or cool, in advance of you returning home, alongside many other household tasks. It's obviously all very appealing. However, to date, while consumer demand has been consistently strong, adoption of smart home tech has not been smooth sailing. Smart home devices traditionally have worked in isolation, not together, which has stifled market penetration and limited potential. Those connectivity issues, as well as cost, were cited in Mintel research from early 2025 as being blockers to mass smart home take up. "I think smart home automation has been expensive and smart products have had some novelty about it, up until now, and in truth it's been quite cumbersome," says Jordan Tentori, CEO of Zimi, which is distributed by Trader. "There's nothing more frustrating than trying to set something up and it not being relatively straightforward. The reality is that 93% of homeowners now own some form of smart technology in their homes – even if it's just a video doorbell application from their smart device." The good news is that those connectivity and cost barriers are in the process of being dismantled. How smart home tech is changing It's not just homeowners who've encountered stumbling blocks with smart home tech. "If you say 'automation' to your average electrician, and they've had any experience of it, they'll probably have PTSD," laughs Jordan. "If they've encountered it before, they probably don't want to know about it now, as it's all been too hard." All of that could be about to change, however, with Matter. We've explored Matter in more depth in this article but essentially it's a common standard by which all smart home tech can connect. Just as USB-C is the common standard for connecting cables to devices, Matter is the new unified standard for connectivity and security that moves beyond brand ecosystems. Zimi, along with 800+ members of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), including the likes of Amazon, Apple, and Samsung, alongside Gemcell suppliers Schneider Electric, Signify, Legrand, and Hager, have joined forces to create a common standard to build a new standard for smart home connectivity. That’s the easy part.” The reality is that in the trade industry, the financials are only one chapter of the book. If you focus solely on the last three years of profit-and-loss statements, you’re missing the bigger picture. Why is the owner often an electrical business’s biggest asset? When you buy a software company or a manufacturing plant, the assets are largely inanimate. You’re buying code, machinery and inventory. When you buy an electrical business, you’re often buying a personality. “In a trade-based business, a lot of the value sits with the owner personally,” Morgan explains. “Their licence. Their relationships with builders and project managers. Their reputation on-site. None of that automatically transfers when you sign.” This is where the ‘spreadsheet trap’ claims its victims. If the builder, the lead project manager, or the commercial site lead is calling the company because they know and trust the outgoing owner, you haven’t bought an asset – you’ve bought a warm lead. Ground zero: Getting the power back on  When flood-prone Lismore in northern NSW was inundated by its worst flood on record in 2022, Aaron Hunt, who runs Hunt Electrical Co, watched the waters rise from a vantage point in his house on top of a hill. “It was a matter of waiting until the water went down,” says Hunt, who is a customer at CNW in Ballina.   Then came the biggie – the most important thing electricians can do in any weather-related disaster situation: getting the power back on safely.   “Once the water went down, the local supply authority, Essential Energy, went around to houses and if the switchboard had been under water, they disconnected power at the pole top. If the switchboard didn't go under, they just disconnected power inside the switchboard,” Hunt says.   In the meantime, a group of local contractors had set up a meeting place in the car park of a local bowls club to help the recovery from disaster. Residents who’d had their power cut off were connected with volunteer electricians. “We were doing what we could to get power restored to homes as a priority,” Hunt says.   “Usually, the quickest way of doing that was to disconnect the entire house, replace what we could in the board, bypass the meter because the meters had been underwater, and just put two power points in the switchboard.  “Then we’d lodge a certificate of compliance and send it to Essential Energy.
